The Advent season is a wonderful time to reassess our relationship with time, the world, ourselves, and God. It is a season of anticipation and expectation. It looks backward to the birth of Christ in Bethlehem 2000 years ago. It looks up, as we sing Glory to God in the Highest! But it also looks forward, to the coming Kingdom of God that every human heart longs for. And it looks down, reminding us through the poor baby in a manger that we also may cry out Glory to God in the Lowest!
This year I have adopted a reading plan that is nearly 1000 years old, and I humbly invite you to join me in the daily practice of reflecting on four questions in each reading:
1) What is going on here?
2) How does this point to Christ at Advent?
3) What does this tell me about how I am to live in light of Christ’s Advent?
4) How does this point forward to the coming Kingdom in the Second Advent?
