Cherry Grove Friends Church has a long history of Christian musical theater. It started in the early 1970s at our small church building just down the street from where we are now located. Many of our productions have been group efforts with other area churches.

Our 2025 production of An Old-Fashioned Christmas is our first major production since COVID. It is our prayer that we can again join with fellow Christians to bring the message of the Lord to our community through drama and music.

TELL ME ABOUT AN OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS

This cantata was originally written in 1978. It features a narrator and a choir singing Christmas songs. The narrator reads a young girl’s diary from the late 1800s, recounting how the emphasis of Christmas has changed. The set is the narrator’s living room around a cozy fireplace. The choir is spiraled around a large Christmas tree with a star above, and images of classic Christmas cards are projected beside the tree.

WHEN ARE REHEARSALS?

Rehearsals begin on Sunday, September 28 at 1:30pm at Cherry Grove Friends Church. Weekly rehearsals will continue to be held on Sundays at 1:30pm unless the cast decides otherwise. Rehearsals will last 1 to 2 hours. Cast members are encouraged to bring their lunch to Cherry Grove at 12:30pm to fellowship prior to rehearsals. The performance weeks may have additional evening rehearsals as deemed necessary. It is important that everyone attend all rehearsals if at all possible for the good of the group. Please discuss any concerns with the director as early as possible.

All music and spoken lines are intended to be memorized to enhance the interaction and communication with the audience. Rehearsals will start with a rehearsal pianist and then transition to instrumental tracks for the performances.

Soloists will be selected by audition.

WHEN ARE THE PERFORMANCES?

Performances will be held between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our hope is to have multiple performances, to allow more family, friends, and community members to attend. The exact performance dates will be determined by the cast and director as the holiday season is hectic and we want to accommodate schedules and other responsibilities as much as possible.

There are no costumes for the production. Instead, cast members are asked to dress in nice holiday attire, including slacks, dresses, dress shirts, etc. with a emphasis on elegant instead of casual.
